What to Expect During a Bathroom Remodel (From Demo to Done)
A Step-by-Step Guide From a Builder Who Respects Your Time, Space, and Budget
Thinking about remodeling your bathroom? That’s a smart move. But before you pick out tile or shop for vanities, it helps to know exactly what the process looks like—so there are no surprises once the work begins.
At Veterans Builders, we’ve remodeled bathrooms across Southeast New Hampshire and Southern Maine for over 18 years. Our clients in Portsmouth, Dover, York, and beyond often tell us, “I wish I knew what to expect before we started.”
So here it is: a no-fluff, honest breakdown of what actually happens during a bathroom remodel—written from the contractor’s side, in your language.

Step 1: Design, Selections, and Prep
Timeline: 1–2 weeks
Before we touch a hammer, we’ll meet with you to walk through the space, talk about what’s not working, and help you visualize what could be better.
You’ll choose:
• Vanity and sink style
• Fixtures and lighting
• Tile, flooring, and paint
• Shower/tub configuration
• Storage needs
• Accessibility features (if needed)
Pro tip: The more decisions you make up front, the faster and smoother the job goes.

Step 2: Demo and Disposal
Timeline: 1–3 days
We carefully remove old materials—tile, tub, vanity, lighting, drywall, etc.—and prep the space for new work. We cover floors, protect your home, and clean up after ourselves daily.
This is when we check for:
• Water damage
• Mold or rot
• Old plumbing or electrical issues
If something unexpected comes up, we’ll show you, explain it, and give you real options.
Step 3: Plumbing, Electrical, and Framing
Timeline: 2–4 days
We rough in all the mechanicals—moving plumbing lines if needed, running new electrical for lights or outlets, and framing for new layouts.
In older homes, this is often where we correct past shortcuts or bring things up to code. That’s part of our job, and we take it seriously.

Step 4: Walls, Floors, and Waterproofing
Timeline: 3–6 days
We install cement board, waterproofing membranes, and tile backer—not just drywall where it doesn’t belong. Then we start on:
• Tile floors
• Shower/tub surrounds
• Trim, paint, and prep for finishing
This is where the bathroom starts to take shape—and where you’ll start to see your design come to life.

Step 5: Fixtures, Cabinets, and Finishes
Timeline: 3–5 days
We install:
• Vanity and mirror
• Toilet and sink
• Light fixtures and fans
• Hardware, accessories, and shower glass
• Baseboards, caulk, final paint touch-ups
We check every valve, outlet, and fixture before we wrap up.
Step 6: Final Walkthrough and Cleanup
Timeline: 1 day
We go through the punch list with you, make sure everything is clean and functional, and answer any final questions. You get a finished space you can use—and be proud of.
We don’t disappear after the last tile is laid. You’ll have our number if you need us, and we’ll stand behind the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does a full bathroom remodel take?
Most projects take 2–5 weeks. We’ll give you a real schedule based on scope and materials.
Q: Can I use the bathroom during the remodel?
No—once we start, that bathroom’s offline. If it’s your only bathroom, we’ll talk through temporary solutions before the project begins.
Q: Do I need permits?
Yes, in most towns. We handle all permits and coordinate inspections to avoid delays.
Q: Will there be dust and noise?
Yes—but we control it. We use barriers, floor protection, and daily cleanup to minimize mess and disruption.
